We cannot create observers by saying 'observe', but by giving them the power and the means for this observation and these means are procured through education of the senses. Maria Montessori

With a move to distance learning for 2020 our JIS team saw a need to change how science was delivered to students. Gone were many of the lab activities due to lack of supplies in student's homes. Gone was the opportunity to tweak students learning with verbal questioning.
The answer was to take science to it's basic beginning and make observations of phenomenon. Using different modalities to heighten the focus and then use those observations to build inferences.

Lab activities could be built around those observations. For example the lab below on building a tower to survive an earthquake. Students need to observe where the tower failed. Then using an inference rebuild the tower and retest their solution.
